What is a mangaka?

So, you want to become a mangaka? Cool!

First things first, you’ll need some solid drawing and storytelling skills. To get them, you can study art and storytelling formally or teach yourself. It’ll help you create more interesting and visually appealing manga. Plus, studying literature, movies and other forms of media can give you a better understanding of storytelling techniques.

Additionally, many mangaka study Japanese language and culture. Since manga is a Japanese art form, it makes sense to know about it’s roots.

Now, you don’t have to go to college or university to be a mangaka, but some people choose to study art or media related subjects. It’s all up to you!

Most mangakas work about 14-15 hours a day drawing, sleep about 3-4 hours a day, and have several hours of free time during the week.

So, how do mangaka make money?

Well, typically through selling their manga. In Japan, mangaka usually get paid for each page of manga they create, by the publisher. It varies depending on the mangaka’s popularity and the publisher.

Mangaka can also earn money through collected volumes of their manga, and through merchandise like t-shirts and other things with their characters on them. Plus, if their manga gets turned into an anime or movie, that’s more money for them.

Also, some mangaka make money by selling their artwork or teaching others about how to make manga.

First, you’ll need drawing materials like pencils, erasers, pens or markers. You’ll also need paper to draw on, some prefer thicker, some prefer thinner.

You’ll also need a computer to scan your drawings and make any necessary changes. Plus, programs like Photoshop or Illustrator can help with coloring and special effects.

You’ll also need a scanner, if you don’t have a flatbed scanner, get one or use a scanning service. And, a printer can come in handy for printing copies of your manga for reference or to share with others.

Additionally, it can be helpful to invest in reference books, art supplies, and software to help you create the best manga possible.
